Suburban commuters in Mumbai are set to experience disruptions as the Western Railway implements a series of major maintenance blocks on weekends between Goregaon and Kandivali stations. This will occur over a 35-day period starting August 27, aimed at completing the construction of the 4.5-kilometre 6th line. According to a statement released on Monday (August 26), Western Railway plans to conduct five 10-hour mega blocks on weekends from August 27 to October 6 to minimise passenger inconvenience. However, no work will be carried out from September 11 to 17 due to the Ganpati festival, as noted by WR General Manager Ashok Kumar Misra. “Since there is no available space to lay the 6th line on the east side of Malad station, the new line will be constructed on the west side, and the existing five lines will be shifted west through a cut-and-connection process,” Misra explained. As a result of this work, some long-distance trains will be delayed by 15 to 20 minutes, and suburban services will also be impacted. On average, 100-140 suburban services will be cancelled, and around 40 services will be short-terminated on weekends. To minimise weekday disruptions, WR will schedule most of the work during night hours. On September 28-29 and October 5-6, trains departing from Bandra Terminus will experience delays of 40-45 minutes due to non-interlocking work on the 5th line between Goregaon and Kandivali. The 5th line between Bandra Terminus is already operational, and the 6th line currently runs between Khar and Goregaon. The ongoing work aims to extend the 6th line from Goregaon to Kandivali, according to officials. Once completed, the 6th line will be further extended to Borivali, creating a dedicated corridor for long-distance trains.
