Samsung Galaxy M35 5G Review: The Mid-Range Contender

By: Deepti Ratnam Published: Aug 26, 2024, 08:21 PM IST | Updated: Aug 26, 2024, 09:02 PM IST When I first laid eyes on the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G, I couldn’t help but appreciate its sleek and modern design. It’s not just another phone in the Galaxy lineup but seems to be a carefully crafted piece aimed at delivering a solid user experience without breaking the bank. After using it for a few weeks, I have a pretty clear picture of what this phone offers and where it stands in the crowded market of budget smartphones. But before we dive into the details, let’s take a look at its specifications: Lets break down its features: The first thing that I noticed while reviewing the M35 5G was its slim body and the weight distribution, which is quite balanced. Samsung has used high-quality polycarbonate in the back panel, which gives it a glossy finish. The phone feels sturdy to hold, but its thickness and weight may not appeal to everyone who is looking for a smartphone in this budget segment. The placement of the fingerprint sensor on the right side is well-designed and easy-to-use. It’s responsive and unlocks the phone almost instantly. You also get a volume rocker above the fingerprint sensor, which is easy to reach. There’s a USB Type-C port, a single speaker grille, on the bottom of the phon. The smartphone lacks 3.5mm jack, so if you are used to it, you need a type c connector. The speaker is fine for casual use, but you cannot rely on it for a better music experience. Samsung Galaxy M35 sports a large display with thick bezels. The display colors are vibrant, thanks to the AMOLED technology. Even in direct sunlight, the display remains readable, and the 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling through social media smooth. The only thing which I found to be not much appreciating is the punch-hole camera cutout at the top center of the display, which is not overly meddling, but I prefer a notch-less experience. But keeping in mind the price segment, this is something I can overlook. Samsung has upgraded the display protection on the Galaxy M35 5G with Gorilla Glass Victus+, and there are two display colour options: Vivid and Natural. During my time with the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G, I didn’t experience any significant slowdowns or lag. I received a 8GB+128GB variant, and I noticed that multitasking was fine. Additionally, the app switching is smooth and the handling of everyday tasks such as browsing the internet, social media, and video streaming is swift. Another feature that grabbed my attention was the addition of a vapour-cooling chamber, which you do not find under this budget segment. The phone was not heating while Playing games like Clash of Clans and BGMI. For a person who appreciates a clean user interface, the One UI is a better option, and the Galaxy M35 5G is equipped with the same. The UI is user-friendly, with several features, including split-screen multitasking, a secure folder, and a dedicated gaming mode. There are several Samsung suites of apps like Samsun Health, SmartThings, Smart Switch, and TV, which are perfect for those who are already in the Samsung ecosystem. However, there are quite a few pre-installed apps that I found unnecessary, but you can remove them. Samsung has also integrated ads into some parts of the UI, thankfully, these can be turned off to a certain extent. As far as the camera setup is concerned, the Galaxy M35 is versatile. The triple camera system with a 64MP primary sensor, 12MP ultra-wide angle, and 5MP depth sensor captures detailed images with vibrant colors in good lighting conditions. The phone comes with an AI scene optimizer, Pro mode, Pro video, Night, Macro, Panorama, Food, Super Slow-mo, Slow motion, Hyperlapse, and single take. The ultra-wide lens is useful for capturing landscapes and group shots, but there is a noticeable drop in detail compared to the primary camera. In low-light conditions, the night mode helps improve the image quality, but there’s still a fair amount of noise. The depth sensor helps in capturing portraits with a good bokeh effect, although edge detection could be more accurate. The front-facing camera is great for selfies, offering clear and sharp images. The portrait mode works well here, too, with natural-looking background blur. Video recording capabilities are solid, supporting up to 4K at 30fps. The stabilization works well enough for casual video shoots, but don’t expect gimbal-level smoothness. The Galaxy M35 5G battery is more than adequate for a day of moderate to heavy use. With a combination of social media browsing, gaming, streaming videos, and a bit of photography, I consistently ended my day with around 20-25 percent battery left. The phone supports 25W fast charging, which isn’t the fastest out there but gets the job done. It took me about 90 minutes to go from 0 to 100 percent, which is reasonable. To sum it up, the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G is a well-rounded device that offers great value for money. For me, the design, display quality, and performance are worth giving a shot under this price segment. However, the camera performance is satisfactory for casual usage. The only issues that I feel are the bloatware, occasional UI ads, and average low-light camera performance. But if you are looking for a smartphone under Rs 20,000, then Galaxy M35 5G proves to be the best option. Author Name | Deepti Ratnam
