The first result of the US presidential election 2024 is out and it is a tie between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. The six votes cast in the tiny New Hampshire resort town of Dixville Notch at midnight were tallied in just 12 minutes and the results were 3-3 for the two candidates. "I didn’t see that coming," reacted one resident after seeing the split result. In the last presidential elections, US President Joe Biden had clinched a 5-0 win over Trump. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton had defeated Trump by 4-2 in 2016. Also Read: What is the 'blue wall'? Will Trump be able to breach it and defeat Harris? In 2012, former President Barack Obama and the GOP nominee Mitt Romney had clinched five votes each after 10 votes were cast in Dixville Notch. However, Obama emerged as a winner with a margin of 5.5 points. The tradition of voting at midnight in Dixville Notch dates back to 1960. Following the tradition, the town this time also started casting their ballots at midnight, and after 12 minutes, the vote counting was completed. The voting happened in the living room of the Tillotson House in Dixville Notch, amid coffee, cookies, and friendly dogs. Midnight voting first started to ensure that the railway workers cast their votes because they were not able to cast a vote in the daytime electoral hours, as per the Associated Press. The town's moderator, Neil Tillotson, began this tradition in the town after learning about the problem from a reporter, and since then the practice of voting has been carried out at midnight. In January, voting for the presidential primaries was held in the town at midnight. In the Republican primary, two independents and four registered Republican voters unanimously voted for former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. The results clearly indicate that the US presidential elections 2024 will have a nail-biting finish with both Trump and Harris engaged in a neck-to-neck battle.
