Boeing’s 737 MAX production gains momentum amid safety and legal turmoil

The Boeing 737 MAX factory picked up in production, the US aerospace group said, struggling to put the past relating to the airplane's continuing safety crisis behind, according to Stephanie Pope, the newly appointed chief of its commercial planes division. Speaking in London ahead of the Farnborough Airshow, Pope addressed reporters for the first time since her appointment earlier this year. Boeing has been working through some serious issues since a door panel on a 737 MAX 9 jet blew off midair in January, triggering a halt to production of its best-selling aircraft and increased regulatory and legal scrutiny. Adding to its troubles, Boeing has agreed to plead guilty to a criminal fraud conspiracy charge related to investigations into two fatal 737 MAX crashes. The company is seeing a "significant improvement in the flow of our 737 factory," Pope told reporters, speaking on a panel with two other Boeing executives. Pope's career path to the position of Boeing's commercial division CEO forms part of a broader reshuffle of management in the background of CEO David Calhoun's intention to leave by the end of the year. Reiterating the outlook of the company, Pope confirmed Boeing's plan to restore the production of the MAX to about 38 planes a month by the end of 2024. Although the turbulent period seems overwhelming with all the safety and legal challenges that Boeing is facing, progress in production reported by the company in 737 MAX speaks much about this big step towards recovery. Improvements in production flow are also critical to restoring faith and further building stability in commercial activities for the future as the business goes through unsettled times. None
