Pavan Naidu Updated : Jul 27, 2024, 06:28 AM IST Leaving behind a well-paying job in the United States to pursue an entrepreneurial path is a daunting decision that many individuals contemplate. The transition from stable employment to the uncertain world of entrepreneurship comes with its own set of challenges and risks. Despite the obstacles, there are certainly those who embrace such hurdles and have carved out successful paths for themselves as entrepreneurs. Such is the story of Shashank Kumar who alongside his friend Harshil Mathur from IIT founded Razorpay which is India's first payment gateway for small businesses and startups. In 2013, India did not have a payment solution for its small-scale businesses, while PayPal, a US-based giant, grappled with regulations. Then emerged a beacon of change - Razorpay. This game-changer founded by the two IITians was India's first payment portal for startups and small ventures. One of the co-founders, Shashank Kumar, who also held the position of CTO, proved instrumental in its development. This brainwave of an idea morphed into a wide-ranging, integrated payment solution. Kumar is currently the Managing Director (MD) while Mathur is the CEO of Razorpay. Born in Patna, Kumar held a lucrative position as a software expert for Microsoft, a leading IT firm in the United States. Yet, his desire for entrepreneurial ventures prompted him to embrace the daring leap into business ownership. Speaking about his education, he completed his schooling at St Xavier's High School in Bihar's Patna. He later found admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee. Following his completion of a degree in computer science engineering, Kumar landed a job at Microsoft in the US. Although he excelled in his role, he quit in less than two years and went on to establish a company that is valued at above $7 billion (Rs 58621 crore approximately), as per a report of Inc42.
