First discovered in 2001, the HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) . Although the current trend of the HMPV outbreak in China seems concerning, experts have stated that the virus has been present in humans for over 60 years and is globally distributed. After infecting an individual, the HMPV can cause both upper and lower respiratory diseases in people of all ages, with young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems being most vulnerable.
