Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony: PV Sindhu, Sharath Kamal lead India's contingent in French capital

The Indian contingent which arrived in the traditional wears of saree for women athletes and salvar kurta for men athletes arrived 84th in the alphabetical order in the opening ceremony. Unlike other Summer Olympic Games, this year’s Summer Games saw the contingent arrive in boats on the River Seine. India made their presence felt in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics as the contingent led by PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal was given a warm reception on Friday (July 26). The Indian contingent which arrived in the traditional wears of saree for women athletes and salvar kurta for men athletes arrived 84th in the alphabetical order in the opening ceremony. Unlike other Summer Olympic Games, this year’s Summer Games saw the contingent arrive in boats on the River Seine. And, we’re all set for the Opening Ceremony! The Indian contingent was joined by 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist Gagan Narang who was the chef-de-mission for India. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief PT Usha was also in the town but was not on the ship that carried the Indian contingent. This year at the Olympics, a total of 117 athletes will participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics from India. The Indian squad is made of 70 male and 47 women athletes across 16 sports disciplines. The contingent also includes 140 support staff and officials. Athletics has the largest representation from India with 29 athletes followed by shooting at 21 and hockey at 19 at the 2024 Paris Olympics. India has won 35 medals at the Olympics and they found most success in hockey where they won 12 medals, mostly due to the men's team efforts from 1928-1936 and 1948-64.
