Over a year after a chargesheet was filed against former BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for allegedly sexually harassing several women wrestlers, the trial in the case began on Friday. The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot in Rouse Avenue had in the last hearing issued summons to two police witnesses to commence the trial. While Constable Mukesh Kumar was in court on Friday, phones (case property) from the Forensic Science Lab had not yet been received. ACJM Rajpoot called ‘Victim number 5’ along with a witness who will corroborate her statements to appear before the court on August 6. Nilanjan Dey representing the complainants said that he could not reach ‘Victim number 5’ and that a timeline showing the availability of all five victims will be provided to the court in the next hearing. In May this year, the court had framed charges against Singh under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354A (sexual harassment). After the charges were framed, Singh had pleaded not guilty. “ Koi sawaal hi nahi hai. Galati kiye hi nahi to maanenge kyun (There is no question. When I did not make a mistake, why would I admit to it?),” he had said. In June last year, Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against Singh for alleged sexual harassment, assault and stalking of six women wrestlers. In its 1,500-page chargesheet, the police had mentioned statements of at least 22 witnesses from across four states, including wrestlers, a referee, a coach and a physiotherapist, who corroborated the allegations made by six women wrestlers against Singh.
