Jeweller takes househelp to cops for ‘theft’, gets charged with rape

A 55-year-old jeweller, who took his 27-year-old househelp to the police accusing her of theft, was booked for rape. An investigation by personnel of Kalachowki police station revealed that the woman was sexually assaulted by the man. According to police, the incident came to light after an initial case of theft was reported to them on Saturday evening. A case was registered under section 306 (which pertains to theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the househelp at Kalachowki police station. An officer said, “The 52-year-old wife of the jeweller was suspicious of the househelp as she claimed that she (the househelp) had stolen Rs 25,000 cash and jewellery worth over Rs 90,000.” Police subsequently took the househelp into custody for interrogation, during which she confessed to have stolen Rs 15,000. Later she broke down and said that her employer’s husband had allegedly sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions at his home. The woman also told police that she started working at their residence in February 2024, as her husband works as a driver. “I did not tell anyone about the incident because I was scared of losing my job,” read her statement. She claimed to have confronted the accused multiple times by telling him that she will complain to his wife, but the accused would respond by alleging that “nobody would believe her as she is a servant”. The woman further told the police that on the afternoon of July 7, when his wife left home with their dog, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted her. “The woman claims that she was injured and her clothes were torn. She did not tell anyone about the incident as the accused threatened her of dire consequences,” an investigator added. Police said that the accused again forced himself on her on July 18 when his wife was not at home. “The accused had then threatened to kill her husband and their child if she tells anyone about the incident,” said an officer. “In order to keep the matter under wraps, the accused started offering her money and when she objected, he would forcefully put it inside her bag. In one instance, the accused got a gold locket for her. He offered it to her, but when she refused, he forcefully put it inside her bag,” the officer added. The woman was sent for medical examination, a senior police officer said, adding, “The Kalachowki police have registered a case against the 55-year-old jeweller under relevant sections for rape, assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty and criminal intimidation. Further investigation is underway,” said a senior police officer. On Monday, a team was sent to his residence to arrest him, however the jeweller was admitted in a hospital instead as he fell sick, an officer said. None
