Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Live Updates: Student outfit to lead ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ today, police impose restrictions in the area

Kolkata Doctor Rape Case, Nabanna Abhiyan Live: The recently formed student body—The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj (Society of Students in West Bengal) — will march to the state secretariat “Nabanna” in Kolkata today. The march aims to demand the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in light of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the city’s R G Kar Hospital. The Kolkata police has called the march “illegal” and banned gatherings of more than five people around the area. The CPI(M) and Congress have refused to join the protest, citing the “RSS connections” of some of the organisers. Centre strikes back at Mamata govt: In response to CM Banerjee’s call for stricter Central laws on sexual assault, Union Minister Annapurna Devi highlighted that only six Fast Track Special Courts were operational in the state as of June, despite a huge pendency in POCSO Act and rape cases. She also slammed the TMC-led state government over “not taking any steps”. What’s the status of the investigation? After a purported video showed several people thronging the crime scene soon after the victim’s body was found on the morning of August 9, Opposition leader Bengal alleged destruction of evidence in the rape and murder case. But the Kolkata police have rejected these claims. The CBI has named Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in the FIR on the the alleged financial irregularities at the institution during his tenure. The polygraph test on the prime accused Sanjay Roy, the results of which are still awaited, is said to be crucial to determine if it was a gang rape or the act of a single perpetrator. As per the Kolkata police, the march organisers have been informed of the restrictions imposed near Nabanna. Gatherings of more than five people have also been banned around the area. In an earlier post on X , the Kolkata Police wrote: “August 27, Tuesday, is the day when several candidates are scheduled to take the UGC-NET exam from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and again from 3 pm to 6 pm. An organisation calling itself ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj’ has called for a ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ on the same day. We have ensured adequate police presence on the roads so that no UGC-NET candidate has difficulty reaching their examination centres. In case of any emergency, candidates are requested to seek help from the nearest police personnel, contact the nearest police station.” The call for August 27 Nabanna Abhiyan — Nabanna is the state secretariat in Howrah – has been given by Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj. While the outfit claims to be apolitical, BJP leaders have backed the protest. Amid claims by the Trinamool Congress and West Bengal Police of potential disruptions, student organisation Chhatra Samaj insisted that their August 27 ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally will be peaceful and focused on demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those responsible for the rape-murder of a doctor in R G Kar hospital. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Chhatra Samaj spokesperson Sayan Lahiri said, “The claims made by the TMC and police are baseless. We aim to raise our demands peacefully. If we are stopped, we will attempt to proceed to the state secretariat, Nabanna, gate in a non-violent manner to demand the CM’s resignation due to her failure to prevent incidents like the RG Kar case, which has shocked the nation.” Lahiri clarified that the rallies, which will start from College Square, Fort William, and Santragachhi at noon and move towards Nabanna, is organised by an apolitical platform with no affiliations to the BJP, RSS, or ABVP.
