Attempts to muzzle Prime Minister has no place in democratic traditions, says Modi ahead of Budget Session

A day before the presentation of the first Budget of the NDA government in its third term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, without naming any member or party, referred to sloganeering by the Opposition members during his reply to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Presidential Address during the first session of the Lok Sabha last month. In his remarks at the beginning of the Budget Session of Parliament, Modi said, “Aapane dekha hoga ki Parliament ke naye sansad gathan hone ke baad jo pahala satra tha, 140 karod deshavaasiyon ke bahumat ke saath jis sarkar ko seva karne ka hukum kiya hai deshavaasiyon ne, uski aavaz ko kuchalne ka alokataantrik prayaas hua. Dhaee ghante tak desh ke pradhan mantri ka gala ghotane ka, unki aavaaz ko rokane ka, unaki aavaaz ko dabaane ka lokataantrik paramparaon mein koee sthaan nahin ho sakta hai. Aur in sabka pashchaataap tak nahin hai, dil mein dard tak nahin hai. (You must have seen that in the first session of Parliament after the formation of the new House, there was an undemocratic attempt to suppress the voice of the government which was voted by the majority of 140 crore countrymen to serve them. Suppressing the voice of the country’s Prime Minister for two and a half hours, stifling his voice, suppressing his voice cannot have any place in democratic traditions. And there is no remorse for all this, there is no pain in the hearts)”. The Prime Minister also said Union Budget 2024 will set the direction for the next five years and will lay a strong foundation for the dream of a Developed India by 2047. “This is the budget session. We are moving ahead to gradually implement the guarantees that I have been giving to the countrymen. This budget is an important budget for Amritkaal. We have an opportunity of 5 years, today’s budget will also determine the direction of our work for those 5 years and this budget will lay a strong foundation for fulfilling our dream of a developed India by 2047, when we will be celebrating 100 years of independence,” PM Modi said. “It is a matter of pride for every countryman that India is the fastest growing country among the countries with big economies. We are moving ahead and growing with a continuous growth rate of 8 per cent in the last 3 years. Today, the positive outlook, investment and performance in India are at the peak of opportunity. This in itself is an important milestone in India’s development journey,” Modi said. Modi also urged the members to rise above the party line in the House. “Today, I want to insist that the countrymen have sent us here for the country, not for the party. This House is not for the party, this House is for the country,” he said. “I believe that all our honourable MPs will enrich the discussion with full preparation, no matter how many opposing views there may be, opposing views are not bad, negative views are bad,” Modi said.
