Mariah Carey is mourning the loss of her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, both of whom passed away on the same day. The Grammy-winning singer shared the heartbreaking news on Monday, expressing her deep sorrow. “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey said in a statement. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.” Further details about the causes of their deaths have not been made public. People Magazine was the first to report the news and Carey’s statement. Patricia Carey was an opera singer and was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah’s father. The couple divorced when Mariah was just 3 years old. Despite a complex relationship, Mariah remained in contact with her mother, even recording a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for her second Christmas album in 2010. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey , the singer opened up about her difficult relationships with both her mother and sister. She detailed how she and her mother often clashed and accused her sister of putting her in unsafe situations during her childhood. Dubbed as the “Songbird Supreme” by Guinness World Records, Mariah Carey was ranked the fifth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone in 2023. In addition to her music career, Carey has also made her mark in acting, with notable roles in films like Precious (2009) and The Lego Batman Movie (2017).
