Delegates of a feather flock together

Landon Nordeman, a photographer on assignment for the Styles desk of The New York Times, was there to document them both. As he trained his lens on Republicans in Milwaukee and Democrats in Chicago, Nordeman focused on the human show, not the stage. He captured attendees wearing everything from glittering American flag high heels to a ballgown emblazoned with an image of Donald Trump ’s blood-streaked face after the attempted assassination. “The convention is a distinct fashion spectacle to its own,” Nordeman said. And while the Democrats’ gathering offered blue manicure stations and a string of celebrity appearances, including by Lil Jon, Oprah Winfrey and John Legend, their fashion statements were more subdued than the extravagant costuming he spotted among Republicans. “They express their political identity more exuberantly than the Democrats do,” Nordeman said. “The Democratic look is more reserved.” In Chicago, instead of ribbons, stickers and hats featuring Vice President Kamala Harris , the ornamentation largely took the form of pins, necklaces and signs urging people to get to the ballot box.
