HMD unveils Skyline, a mid-range Android phone that you can repair at home

HMD, the company that owns the Nokia brand today unveiled Skyline, a new smartphone that takes inspiration from the Nokia Lumia lineup. Powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset, HMD says that the Skyline will have the same repairability as the Fairphone. Compared to most modern smartphones, the HMD Skyline has a relatively small 6.55-inch OLED screen with a refresh rate of 144Hz and 1,000 nits peak brightness. Available in pink and black, the phone offers up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage that can be expanded using a microSD card. The back of the phone houses a 108MP primary camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) that doubles up as a 50MP telephoto camera with 4x lossless zoom and a 13MP ultrawide shooter. While it may not be the fastest or best phone in its price bracket, the selling point is the ease of repairability. The back of the phone can be opened by simply unscrewing a single screw, something which will definitely help smartphone enthusiasts to quickly open the phone in case they damage the screen or the charging port. HMD says it will sell the necessary parts and has also partnered with iFixit to supply spare parts. All of this is backed by a 4,600mAh battery which can be charged at 33W and also supports 15W magnetic Qi2 wireless charging. However, you won’t get a charging brick in the box. Similar to the iPhone’s Action button, you also get a customisable power button on the side that also acts as a fingerprint scanner. On the software front, HMD is promising 2 Android updates and 3 years of security patches. It also comes with a built-in Detox Mode, which, as the name suggests, blocks notifications and access to social media apps like Instagram and Facebook . None
