In a significant move, the Maharashtra assembly on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution urging the Central government to rename Pune’s Lohegaon airport as “Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport.” The resolution will now be forwarded to the Civil Aviation Ministry for the necessary steps to implement the change. The decision to name the airport after Sant Tukaram reflects a tribute to the revered 17th-century saint and poet, known for his devotion to Lord Vitthal and his contribution to the Bhakti movement. Sant Tukaram’s teachings and Abhangas (devotional poems) continue to inspire millions, making this move a nod to cultural and spiritual heritage. Amidst this development, Pune International Airport (PIA) has made notable strides in enhancing passenger convenience by installing two advanced inline baggage screening systems in the basement of its New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB). These state-of-the-art systems can process 1,200 to 1,400 bags per hour, streamlining security checks for pre-embarkation. Previously, passengers faced a manual screening process that took approximately 30 minutes to clear checked-in luggage. With the introduction of these inline baggage systems, the processing time has been drastically reduced to around 10 minutes, marking a 70 per cent improvement in efficiency. The systems also align with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines, ensuring global standards of operation. Santosh Dhoke, the Airport Director, emphasised the positive impact of the new systems on passenger movement. “This upgrade has significantly enhanced the overall airport experience by reducing waiting times and ensuring smoother operations. It’s a step towards elevating Pune airport’s service standards to match international benchmarks,” Dhoke stated. The renaming of Pune airport and the ongoing infrastructural developments highlight the city’s commitment to honouring its heritage while advancing modern aviation standards. The proposed name, “Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport,” not only pays homage to a historical figure but also positions Pune as a city that bridges tradition with progress. None
