Pamban Bridge project: Indian Railways completes country’s first vertical lift sea bridge

Indian Railways has achieved a major feat with the completion of the Pamban bridge, the country’s first vertical lift sea bridge. The newly built bridge which is a testament to modern engineering will connect Mandapam in mainland India to Pamban Island and Rameswaram. This iconic project is carried out by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), a public sector undertaking under Indian Railways, displays innovative design and advanced technology. The new Pamban bridge is an architectural marvel, spread over 2.05 kilometres with 100 spans of 19.3 meters each and a unique navigational span of 63 meters. The vertical lift feature is one of the pioneering designs in India and second in the world. The bridge has been designed by the international consultant TYPSA, which has adhered to Indian and European standards. The new structure comprises electro-mechanical controlled systems merged with a train control mechanism making it distinct from the old manually operated bridge. The use of an advanced system that includes a counterweight mechanism helps cut down the consumption of electricity. To make a safe passage for ships, the bridge also has a higher vertical clearance of 3.0 meters in comparison to the older structure. It will provide a navigational air clearance of 22 meters above sea level. The Pamban bridge not only showcases technological progress but also represents India’s infrastructure development. The old design was commissioned in 1914 and the new design had its challenges. The old bridge’s vertical clearance was limited and used to splash seawater on its girders. On the other hand, the advanced lift mechanism provides a horizontal width of 63 meters of navigation, which will allow smooth passage for ships. The project has been made for Rs 535 crores, it will boost the operational speeds of the trains and increase the connectivity between the mainland and Rameshwaram Island. This will also benefit the pilgrims who will be travelling to Ramanathaswamy Temple and will also attract tourists from worldwide. The Pamban bridge will foster regional tourism and boost economic activity. Moreover, its unique design and scenic beauty promises to leave a lasting impression on the visitors.
