Apple to bring Tetraprism lens to iPhone 16 Pro models, using 2023 supplier

Apple is set to enhance its iPhone 16 Pro lineup by introducing the Tetraprism Telephoto lens, a feature previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This move is part of Apple’s strategy to elevate the camera capabilities of its new flagship models with improved zoom functionality and image quality. According to a report from The Elec, Apple will initially source these advanced folded zoom modules from the same supplier it used in 2023, continuing its partnership with LG Innotek. The Tetraprism Telephoto lens utilises a folded glass structure that reflects light four times to achieve a longer focal length. This technology allows for an impressive 120mm focal length, which enhances the zoom capabilities of the camera. With the new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, users can expect 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom, offering greater flexibility and clarity in capturing distant subjects. The iPhone 16 Pro models are anticipated to launch on September 20, bringing this lens technology to a broader range of Apple’s devices. The lens includes 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization, which significantly improves photo quality by making micro-adjustments in three directions. This feature ensures sharp, stable images even at higher zoom levels, addressing one of the key challenges in smartphone photography. Initially, LG Innotek will supply the folded zoom modules for the iPhone 16 Pro series. However, as the initial stock is expected to be used up by the fourth quarter, Apple plans to shift some of the manufacturing responsibilities to secondary vendors, including Foxconn and Cowell. This move aims to reduce production costs while still meeting the demand for high-quality camera modules. Interestingly, Sharp, another major player in the camera module market , will not be involved in supplying components for any iPhones launching this year. This shift underscores Apple’s evolving supply chain strategies and its focus on leveraging existing partnerships to enhance its product offerings.
