The Modi government has announced the recruitment of 45 specialists for joint secretary, director, and deputy secretary roles across various central ministries in a bid to enhance governance and infuse new talent into key positions. This initiative aims to bring fresh perspectives and specialized expertise into the government. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has advertised 10 joint secretary positions and 35 director/deputy secretary posts, all to be filled through lateral entry on a contract basis. This recruitment drive marks a continued effort to incorporate private sector specialists into government roles, a process that has been ongoing since 2018. The available positions include joint secretaries in the Home, Finance, and Steel ministries, while the director/deputy secretary roles are spread across ministries such as Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Civil Aviation , and Information & Broadcasting. The recruitment will be conducted via online applications on the UPSC website by September 17. The new appointments are intended to strengthen policy-making and administrative functions within these ministries. The latest push for lateral entry aims to leverage the specialized knowledge and experience of candidates from the private sector. Currently, 63 appointments have been made through this mode, with 35 coming from the private sector. Presently, 57 officers are serving in various ministries under this scheme. The lateral entry process seeks to fill positions like Joint Secretary (Policy & Plan) at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Joint Secretary (Emerging Technologies) and Joint Secretary (Semiconductors and Electronics) under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology , and several roles in the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways. Of the 35 director/deputy secretary roles, eight will be filled in the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, with additional positions in the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Ministry of Law and Justice, among others.
