Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu schools closed amid rain

School Closed News: South India is reeling under the rain and in view of this several state governments including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have ordered private and government schools to shut down for physical classes. Here’s the list of those who have ordered a closure of schools amid the prevailing weather conditions: Bengaluru : Bengaluru Urban District collector Jagadeesha on Tuesday evening issued orders to announce holidays for schools and colleges for October 16 as rains are likely to continue for the next few days. The India Meteorological Department had forecast very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning and squalls on Wednesday for coastal, north interior and south interior parts of Karnataka . It has forecast very heavy rain for Bengaluru and surrounding districts of coastal, north interior and south interior of Karnataka till October 18, IMD officials said. Overcast conditions are likely to continue in the city over the next three to four days. In the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Wednesday, Bengaluru city received 66.1 mm rainfall, they said. Chennai : A red alert was sounded for Chennai and its neighbouring areas for today, indicating the possibility of isolated extremely heavy rain. The Greater Chennai Corporation has housed people living in low lying areas in relief centres and all support is being extended to them, including food. The IMD said the depression over Bay of Bengal is now about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai, 390 km east of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh . “It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu – South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October,” the department said in a post on ‘X.’ The Andhra Pradesh government has also announced a holiday for schools and colleges across Tirupati, Chittoor, Nellore, and Prakasam districts today. The school holidays will continue till October 17. The IMD had forecast vigorous monsoon activity in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Tuesday, with fairly widespread rainfall distribution. A similar weather pattern was also forecast for the Rayalaseema region of the southern state with widespread rainfall. Several places received heavy rainfall by Tuesday morning. Kavali in Nellore district recorded a rainfall of 15 cm, followed by Addanki ( Bapatla ) 14 cm, Kandukur (Nellore) 12 cm, Yanam 9 cm and Atmakur (Nellore) 8 cm, among others in coastal Andhra Pradesh region. In the Rayalaseema region, Kodur in YSR Kadapa district registered a rainfall of 10 cm, followed by Sullurpeta and Gudur (Tirupati) 7 cm and 6 cm respectively, among others.
