Strong, independent women—we see them everywhere. From the boardroom to the silver screen, women are breaking barriers and defying traditional gender roles. Be like them, they said. But for comedian Sharon Verma, that looked difficult, so she decided she was going to be a “weak, independent woman” instead. And it’s this punchline that has propelled Verma to Internet fame. The nascent comic has been going viral online since last few weeks after her appearance on ‘India’s Got Latent’. The comedy talent hunt is run by comedian Samay Raina, wherein judges “hilariously critique the untapped, undeniably entertaining latent talents of aspiring performers, testing their self-awareness with a unique scoring system.” On a recently premiered show episode, Verma hit the ball out of the park with well-placed jokes about being a ‘Sharon’ in Bihar, consent, and being a “weak, independent woman.” A post shared by Sharon (@sharonverma) When Samay asks Sharon why her form describes her as a “weak, independent woman”, the comedian says in her dead-pan way, “Strong, independent woman main ban nahi paa rahi hun. (I’m not able to become a strong, independent woman.)” When judges prompt her why, Sharon says, “Generational wealth thi nahi mere paas toh banna pada mujhe independent. Aur, I am just at that point ki main ab kisi bhi point pe dependent ho sakti hun.” (I didn’t have generational wealth, so I had to become independent by earning my own money, and since I don’t even make that much, I could become dependent at any point.) A post shared by Sharon (@sharonverma) At the beginning of her bit, Sharon introduces herself and asks everyone to guess where she’s from. When someone in the audience guesses Bandra, Sharon laughingly says, “Very close. Bihar,” and adds, “Sharon naam rakh diya mera Bihar mein. 3 log bol paa rahe hai. Mummy, papa aur main. (They named me Sharon in a place like Bihar. Only 3 people can say it–me, my mom and my dad.) None
