Gen-Z devoting 1 hour in a week to upskilling for career growth: Udemy report

India’s Gen Z workforce is committed to learning and career development, with 98 per cent dedicating at least one hour each week to upskilling, a new report by Udemy says. The report titled Gen Z in the Workplace: Welcoming the Next Generation, surveyed 6,500 multi-generational learners globally, including 900 respondents from India. It also highlights the key motivations behind this generation’s drive to learn – increasing earning potential (62 per cent), achieving personal growth (59 per cent), and staying competitive in their industries (56 per cent). Udemy’s findings show that the younger workforce in India is not only motivated to grow but also values work environments that recognise achievements and provide clear communication. A significant 72 per cent of Gen Z respondents emphasized the importance of recognition from direct managers, while 44 per cent sought transparency regarding job expectations. The report also underscores Gen Z’s mixed sentiments towards artificial intelligence in education. Despite their active engagement with generative AI tools, they remain cautious about its effectiveness. While 78 per cent of India’s Gen Z believes AI can enhance their learning experience, this level of confidence lags behind that of Millennials (84 per cent). Vinay Pradhan, Country Manager and Senior Director for Udemy India and South Asia, emphasised the need for organisations to understand the unique expectations of Gen Z. “To attract and retain top talent from this generation, companies must focus on offering opportunities for professional growth and mental stimulation, while fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment,” he stated. With the rapid pace of technological advancements and shifting workplace dynamics, Gen Z is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping the workforce. Employers that invest in continuous learning and development, particularly in high-demand areas like AI, will be better positioned to harness the potential of this new generation of workers. None
