100 in 28 balls! Gujarat’s Urvil Patel smashes fastest T20 ton by an Indian, breaks Rishabh Pant’s record

Exactly a year after he cracked the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List-A cricket, Gujarat wicket-keeper Urvil Patel has smashed the fastest T20 hundred by an Indian batter in 28 balls against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Wednesday. Urvil romped to his hundred in only 28 balls during Gujarat’s sensational 156-run chase in only 10.2 overs. Opening the batting, the hard-hitting Patel finished unbeaten on 113 off 35 balls with 12 maximums and seven fours with a jaw-dropping 322.86 strike-rate, only bettered among T20 centurions by Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan during his 27-ball hundred for Estonia against Cyprus earlier this year. Patel surpassed Rishabh Pant ’s record for the fastest T20 ton by an India. The India wicket-keeper had cracked a 32-ball hundred against Himachal Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy back in 2018. Interestingly, on November 27, 2023, Patel had clobbered a 41-ball hundred for Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Arunachal Pradesh in Chandigarh , making it the second-quickest by an Indian after Yusuf Pathan ’s 40-ball century in 2009/10. Urvil was part of the Gujarat Titans squad for the IPL 2023 season and was released by ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. He was also listed for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, but found no takers at his base price of Rs 30 lakh.
