A few sanctions from the United States of America restricted Huawei from using hardware and software made by US companies, and this has led to a point where the company has announced its first non-Android smartphone –– the Huawei Mate 70 series, powered by custom HarmonyOS NEXT. Huawei ’s latest flagship smartphone––Mate 70–– is the first to ship with the HarmonyOS NEXT, which can neither run Android apps nor support Google services. Huawei chairman Richard Yu calls the Mate 70 “the most powerful Mate phone ever,” and it will soon be available for purchase in China. The Huawei Mate 70 series consists of four different models –– Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro Plus, and Mate 70 RS. To make the transition smoother, Huawei is said to be offering a choice between Android-based HarmonyOS 4.3 and HarmonyOS NEXT. However, starting early next year, all phones and tablets from Huawei will ship with HarmonyOS NEXT by default. There is no exact information on what chips power the Huawei Mate 70 series. A report by Gizmochina indicated that both phones feature a 6.7-inch screen, while the Pro variant comes with extra bells and whistles, including satellite connectivity, Wi-Fi 7, a 48 MP telephoto camera, and more. The Mate 70 starts at 5,499 yuan (Rs 64,000, approximately), while the Mate 70 Pro and the Mate 70 Pro Plus are priced at 6,499 yuan (Rs 75,667, approximately) and 8,499 yuan (Rs 98,952, approximately), respectively. The Mate 70 RS costs 11,999 yuan (Rs 1,39,702, approximately), and it offers extra bits and pieces like a titanium frame. Huawei has also introduced the Mate X6 featuring a 7.63-inch foldable display, slightly thinner and lighter than the Mate X5 and starts at 12,999 yuan (Rs 1,51,345, approximately). Huawei has been cut off from using Google services on its devices since 2019, but the company continued to ship its devices with Android-based HarmonyOS, as Android is open source. Currently, the company is said to be bolstering its relationship with app developers, where it is said to have received over 15,000 applications for its HarmonyOS ecosystem and will soon have over 100,000 apps in the coming months.
