Why Follow-Up Care Is Important For Cancer Patients After Undergoing Successful Treatment

Written by Prerna Mittra | Updated : January 4, 2025 9:01 AM IST What happens after one survives cancer? Surviving cancer is a huge achievement in itself, and probably the most crucial milestone in a patient's life. But, just like the treatment phase, post-treatment options have to be weighed and prioritised, too, by both survivors and their families. They must know that the cancer journey does not simply end with a successful treatment. Of course, one is allowed to celebrate this phase. But, cancer patients are often advised to take follow-up care seriously for the betterment of their health. It plays a vital role in monitoring their health while ensuring speedy recovery. Usually, follow-up care involves regularly visiting the doctor for routine check-ups and for health screenings. Doing this can help detect visible signs of recurrence of cancer, or any new health complication that can arise and become problematic, if neglected. According to Dr Chaitra Deshpande, radiation oncologist at Onco Life Cancer Center, Satara , since cancer patients undergo cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgical procedures that are known to cause certain side effects, they must be vigilant. "These side effects can cause long-term impact on the body, and lead to fatigue, weakened immune system, and hormonal changes. Follow-up care is crucial for combating cancer and healing from the inside out," she said.
